Zelda Ocarina of Time Death Mountain Crater

The Death Mountain Crater in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a scorching hot area that's home to the Fire Temple and its fiery boss. This is also where Adult Link learns the Bolero of Fire song, and is home to one of the Great Fairies who you don't want to miss out on!

To aid with your exploration of this area (and accessing it in the first place), here's my Zelda: Ocarina of Time Death Mountain Crater guide.

Zelda Ocarina of Time Death Mountain Crater

The Death Mountain Crater in Ocarina of Time is where Link tackles the Fire Temple and comes face to face with its boss, and you can access it by going through the secret passage in Darunia's room in Goron City during Link's adult era. (You don't have any objectives to complete here as Child Link for what it's worth.)

Below, you'll find an overview of what objectives you'll be completing here, as well as the locations of any key collectibles in the area.

  • Adult timeline
  • Gold Skulltula locations
  • Heart Piece locations

Adult timeline

As Adult Link, upon first entering the area, you'll be taught the Bolero of Fire song by Sheik. After this, you'll need to complete the following objectives in the Death Mountain Crater:

  • Complete 'Fire Temple' dungeon.
    • Defeat Volvagia.

You'll also be able to collect the following upgrades from the Death Mountain Crater as Adult Link:

  • Double Magic Meter – This is unlocked by meeting with the Great Fairy in the Death Mountain Crater. To reach her, you'll need to have the Megaton Hammer unlocked.

It's also worth mentioning that before you venture into the Death Mountain Crater, make sure you have unlocked the Goron Tunic (and equipped it) by stopping the young Goron you encounter as you enter Goron City as Adult Link. You won't get far without it, as the Death Mountain Crater will quickly burn you to a crisp without the Goron Tunic's heat protection properties!

Gold Skulltula locations

There are two Gold Skulltula to collect in the Death Mountain Crater. These are as follows:

Gold Skulltula #1:

As Child Link, enter the Death Mountain Crater from its top entrance and continue forward until you can see two crates on your left-hand side. Roll into the shaking crate. In the original, this crate is next to you when you enter the crater.

Gold Skulltula #2:

As Child Link, first trap some bugs in an empty bottle before playing Bolero of Fire. Now, before the timer runs out, pop them into the soft soil near the warp pad.

Heart Piece locations

There are three Heart Pieces to collect in the Death Mountain Crater. These are as follows:

Heart Piece #1:

This Heart Piece is hidden in alcove in the climbable wall in Death Mountain Crater. To reach it as Child Link, you'll need to enter the crater from the Death Mountain summit entrance. You'll then have a short period of time in which to climb down the wall and grab the Heart Piece. Just be prepared for Link to possibly burn to death after grabbing it!

The Heart Piece is easier to get as Adult Link, because you can use the Goron Tunic to prevent death by heat.

Heart Piece #2:

For this Heart Piece, you first need to make sure you've learned Bolero of Fire. With this tune in your song book, return to the past and, as Child Link, use it to warp to the Death Mountain Crater. Once there, plant a Magic Bean in the soft soil on the edge of the wrap platform. Be quick or else Link will burn!

With that seed planted, go back to the future. As Adult Link, play Bolero of Fire again. You'll find the bean has grown into a flying plant, which can somehow survive the crater's heat. Jump on the plant and it will take you to the Heart Piece atop the spiked rock.

Heart Piece #3:

As Child Link (and with 100 Rupees to spare), enter Death Mountain Crater from the top entrance and head left until you can stop a Business Scrub below you on a ledge. Drop down onto this ledge and use the Fairy Slingshot to defeat it. To say sorry for attacking you, the Business Scrub will then sell you a Heart Piece for 100 Rupees.

It is also worth remembering that Child Link will take damage inside the crater and, if it's equipped, your Deku Shield may turn to ash. Be careful!

That's all for the Death Mountain Crater! For more on Ocarina of Time, take a look at where to find all Empty Bottles, where to find all chickens in Kakariko Village, and all upgrade locations if you fancy the ability to carry more Bombs, Rupees, and more.
